Mini dental implants — when are they a suitable alternative? (2026)

Quick answer: what are mini implants?

Mini dental implants are titanium implants of smaller diameter — usually 1.8–2.9 mm (classic ones are 3.5–6 mm). They are placed in a narrow jaw or where there is not enough room for a classic implant.

Key differences:

  • Smaller diameter (type of screw)
  • A less invasive procedure (often without a gum incision)
  • Cheaper (about 50–60% of the price of a classic implant)
  • Faster recovery
  • Shorter lifespan (10–15 years vs. 20+ for classic)

When mini implants are suitable

1. Stabilising a removable denture

The most common use. 4 mini implants in the lower jaw give the denture extra support — it no longer moves and needs no adhesive. It is not a fixed bridge, however; the denture remains removable, just holds better.

2. A patient with a narrow jawbone

When a classic implant (3.5+ mm) does not fit into the bone and bone augmentation is not possible or desired.

3. A missing front tooth with a narrow space

When the neighbouring teeth narrow the space and a classic implant would be too tight.

4. An older patient who cannot manage an extensive procedure

Mini implants are less invasive — a short procedure, fast recovery. A possible alternative for a very old patient.

When mini implants are NOT a good choice

To be honest: mini implants have a narrow range of indications. They are not suitable for:

  • Single-tooth replacement in the back (the mechanical loads are too great for a mini implant)
  • Fixed bridges or complex prosthetic solutions
  • Younger patients (the lifespan is not enough)
  • High aesthetic demands (mini implants have limits for prosthetic reconstructions)
  • Patients who grind their teeth (bruxism)

At Koderman — our practice

To be honest: at Koderman we rarely use mini implants. The reason:

  • For denture stabilisation we have better solutions (classic implants + locator)
  • For patients with little bone we have sinus lift and subperiosteal implants
  • For complete jaw rehabilitation we have All-on-4 / All-on-6
  • Premium classic implants (Sweden & Martina) are a better long-term investment

If, after the consultation, I judge that mini implants are the best solution for you, I will honestly recommend them.

A real decision example

A 78-year-old patient, the entire lower jaw missing, wearing a removable denture that moves.

Option A — 4 mini implants + removable denture with support:

  • Price: about €2,500
  • Lifespan: 10–15 years
  • The denture remains removable but holds well

Option B — All-on-4 (4 classic implants + fixed bridge):

  • Price: €5,500 (with the 10% senior discount €4,950)
  • Lifespan: 20+ years
  • Fixed teeth — never removed, eat as with natural teeth

At Koderman we usually recommend B, because it is a better long-term solution and quality of life is higher. But if the patient cannot afford B, A is still better than “just a removable denture”.

Frequently asked questions

Are mini implants cheaper to place? Yes, a single mini implant €250–400 vs. €650 for a classic one. But because of the shorter lifespan (10–15 years vs. 20+), the long-term cost per year is similar.

Can a mini implant support a bridge? Technically yes, but mechanically it is not the best choice. For bridges we recommend classic implants.

How long does the procedure with mini implants take? 4 mini implants: 30–45 minutes under local anaesthesia. Classic: 60–90 min for the same number.

Can I replace them with classic ones later? Yes, if the patient decides on an upgrade. We remove the mini implant, wait 2–3 months (bone regeneration) and place a classic one.

At Koderman — do you place mini implants? After an individual assessment. First a consultation with 3D CT — if mini implants are the best solution for your case, we place them. Often, though, after the consultation the patient chooses All-on-4 or classic implants, as they are better in the long run.
